Sun: Worship in Naigobia |
| Tuesday, September 19, 2006 |
As we awoke today, the rain came down in sheets, with ever increasing fervor. As I contemplated spending the day outside soaking wet, I think my first doubts crept in. "What am I doing in the middle of Africa?" I knew our purposes here were noble and our hearts were genuine, but the weather and coming off the high of the previous day left me wondering if there was anything left to do. There was...we would worship with the church in Naigobia, and then enjoy a feast of the goat and chicken gifted to us the previous day after the borehole dedication.
By the end of breakfast, the rain had subsided, which did wonders for my hope. We started our travel with four stops at local stores to find the parts and service necessary to restore our flat tire to useful service. Then we proceeded to arrive at the 10:00a worship gathering in Naigobia, which we arrived at 11:30a because of our delay with restoring the tire. I am learning that a spare tire is essential when traveling these roads.
They delayed starting until we arrived, and the proceeded to sing many songs that seemed to be adaptations of old lutheran hymns done Ugandan style (hand drums, responsive singing, periodic shrills from the women, and short repetitions of simple phrases by the children). The church shelter was about the size of a typical american elementary classroom, although we had probably 40 adults and well over 100 children squeezed everywhere and on every inch of the floor.
We then shared welcomes for eachother from the village leadership (this is common at many gatherings), and we shared our love for them and our motivation to be a blessing. We then visited the site of the old well (standing water hole)...it was teeming with frogs and floating junk...yuck!
We then visited the pig farm, which was started by Peter (village worship leader) to raise pigs to give away and provide economic benefit to the recipient. He had thus far had 20 pigs, and given them all away. He currently had 5 growing. Incredible management and stewardship from the original $10 investment!
More later...peace from Uganda!
Your servants,
Troy, Paul, and Mike
