Solar Power System for Naigobya Health Center
   Tuesday, October 28, 2008

Got an interest in helping "Friends Serving Uganda" with a relief project that has blossomed beyond our capacity in the last week? We were given 25% of a 40 foot shipping container heading to Uganda (at NO COST to us) and just given some medical equipment for the health center in Naigobya Uganda that we opened last year.

The rural location does not have electricity, which means that this medical equipment will not be able to be used. Also, they cannot keep meds and vaccinations requiring refrigeration in the health center because of no power/refrigeration (20 km bicycle ride to the dispensary when needed). The cost of the total system (solar panel, battery, 12v frigerator, etc) is $1200 total. Believe me, if we could cover this ourselves we would in a heartbeat, but our treasury is tapped out after just completing a $20k community training center and orphan school. I wouldn't ask on short notice, except that we have the space in the shipping container if we had the solar system to load on the container....a fleeting opportunity to be sure.

I hate urgent requests...so let me apologize in advance. Our shipping container is leaving St Louis on Nov 15th. We already have our medical equipment, vocational training tools (sewing machines, carpentry tools, etc) loaded, in addition to thousands of meals from Feed My Starving Children on the container. But we're asking our church, our friends, and our health care providers if they might be interested in donating money towards the $1200 solar electrical system. Even $25 or $50 from several friends can allow thousands of dollars in medical equipment to be utilized!

Read this recent monthly report from the health center, so that you might be encouraged to see that they are seeing almost 600 patients a month (half of them under 5 yrs old) and treating nasty stuff like malaria, TB, pneumonia, worms, etc - making a real difference! A powered lab with refrigeration and modest lab tools (that we were just given) would enable them to work even more effectively and more accurately diagnose and treat. Friends like you helped to provide clean water to the entire village, which has greatly improved the health of this village!

Let me know if you have interest...any amount made out to "Friends Serving Uganda" would be 100% tax deductible and 110% appreciated!

10/30 update: we have had a number of individuals respond and this need has been met over and above what was needed! The extra funds will be used to upgrade our solar panel from 80 watts to 123 watts. THANK YOU to all of you who gave and/or prayed for this effort!

thanks in advance,
Troy
